Q. 8 Write a summary of “The doll’s House”.
Answer: “The doll’s house” by Katherine Mansfield is study of the behavior of people living in a class-ridden society. It tells us how parents attitudes influences their children and deprive them of their natural goodness and innocence. The Burnells belong to the upper class. They hate the poor. They do not like their children mixing with the boys and girls of the lower classes. But there is no exclusive school for the children of aristocracy in the whole district. So Ali the children of the village have to attend the same school. The burnell’s family cannot stop the children of the poor from attending the school but they do not allow their daughters, Isbel, Lottie and Kezia, to talk with them, particularly Lil and Else Kelvey the daughters of a washerwoman. Once the Burnell children received a doll’s house as a gift from a relative Mrs. Hay. It was big and beautiful doll’s house it looked read with its painted walls and furnished rooms. The children were overjoyed. The youngest, Kezia, thought that the most beautiful thing in the doll’s house was the lamp that stood on the dining table. The burnell sisters were very proud of their doll’s house and they were eager to all their school fellows about it. Their mother agreed to allow two girls from school to come and look at the doll’s house daily. The next day, the three sisters hurried to school but they could not tell their friends about the doll’s house before the roll call. However, Isable had time enough to whisper to her friends that she had a great news for them. During the play-time Isabel was surrounded by her friends. The Kelvey sisters dared not come near her, but they could hear as she spoke about the doll’s house. The doll’s house made a great sensation. Days passed and as more children saw the doll’s house its fame spread. It became the most popular topic in school. One day Kezia asked her mother if she could bring the Kelveys to see the doll’s house. Her request was disallowed. One day, during the dinner hour, Isabel and her friends suddenly thought of insulting the Kelveys. Lena Logan ran towards the Kelveys and shouted, “Is it true that you are going to be a servant when you grow up, Lil Kelvey?” Lil smiled her silly shame-faced smile, and gave no reply. Lena shouted again “Yah, yer father is in prison.” Her friends were deeply excited at her boldness. That afternoon after coming home, Kezia slipped into the backyard and began to swing on the back gat. Suddenly she saw the Kelveys walking along the road. As they came close to the gate. She invited them to come and look at the doll’s house. Lil refused but then Else pulled Lil’s blouse. She looked back and understood that Else wished to see the doll’s house. They followed Kezia into the backyard and looked at the doll’s house. Suddenly Aunt Berly’s angry voice rang out, “Kezia, how dare you ask them into the house?” Then she turned to the Kelveys and ordered them to leave the house. Burning with shame, shrinking together, they sat down on a drain pipe. Lil’s cheeks were still red with shame. She was lost in thoughts. Else smiled and said, “I seen the lamp.”
