What two principal functions are performed by a shift register? How many clock pulses are required to enter a byte of data serially into an 8-bit shift register?
A shift register synchronously shifts out a bit on the rising edge og the falling edge of a clock. It is used to convert parallel data to serial. This mean it can take in several bits at once and then output them bit by bit on the rising or falling edge of the clock. Shift registers are typically used in USRATs and other buses such as I2C and SPI where there is only one data line
