Please read the following instructions carefully before solving & submitting assignment:
It should be clear that your assignment will not get any credit (zero marks) if:
The assignment is submitted after due date.
The submitted assignment does NOT open or file is corrupt.
The assignment is copied (from other student or ditto copy from handouts or internet).
You are supposed to submit your assignment in .doc / Docx format. Any other formats like scan images, PDF, Zip, rar, bmp etc will not be accepted.

Objectives:
The objectives of this assignment are,
• To give students the idea of the most commonly used RDBMS for designing physical database systems i.e. SQL SERVER.
• To build and manage SQL Server databases.
• To apply constraints e.g. Primary Key and foreign key on attributes.
• To retrieve and manipulate data with SQL queries from tables.
• To insert, update, and delete data from SQL tables.
For any query about the assignment, contact at cs403@vu.edu.pk
GOOD LUCK
Marks: 20

Production House Budgeting System
Entertainment industry is flourishing day by day in Pakistan. Due to the revival of Film industry new production houses are opening. The production company is generally responsible for fundraising for the production. It handles budgeting, scheduling, scripting, supply with talent and resources, the organization of staff, the production itself, post-production, distribution, and marketing.
Suppose Mr. “X” is your friend and has opened a production company with the name “Dream Anime”. He wants you to automate the whole processing of the company, especially the budgeting of the films to keep track of the financial status of the company.
A film goes through many phases. Development, Preproduction, production, post production and distribution are the main phases of film production.
Suppose the story of the movie has been decided in the development phase by the producer and it is moved to the production phase.
Pre-Production:
In pre-production, every step of actually creating the film is carefully designed and planned. The film is pre-visualized by the director, and may be storyboarded with the help of illustrators. A production budget is drawn up to plan expenditures for the film. Expenditures include cast, crew, production cost (location expenditure, equipment etc), visual effects and music etc.
The producer hires a crew. The nature of the film, and the budget, determine the size and type of crew used during filmmaking.
Production manager handles all the expenses and cost related issues. He along with producer decides the budget of the project and manages the resources accordingly. He is also responsible for collecting the finance for the project. Production manager also contacts funding agencies and finalizes the deal.
After Preproduction, project goes into the production and post-productionphases where the actual filming, editing and mixing etc. are done. When the movie is in the final shape and ready to be in the cinemas, it goes into the distribution phase.

Distribution:
This is the final stage, where the film is released to cinemas, occasionally, directly to consumer media (DVD, VCD, VHS, Blu-ray). The film is duplicated as required and distributed to cinemas/distributors for exhibition (screening).
After the movie releases, the production company keeps track of the revenue generated by the movie from all possible ways. They keep checking the profit and loss status of the movie after all payments. The profit of the funding companies is also paid back.
Academic Research Paper Requirements:
Following are the requirements for the academic research paper:
a) Paper Length
Your paper should not be less than 6 pages and not more than 12 pages.
b) Quality of Writing
The clarity and style of expression, the degree to which your paper obeys the rules to formal academic grammar, punctuation, spelling, formatting details like paragraph indentation and location of page breaks, are part of quality of writing. Write and edit your paper carefully for good organization, clear language with good spelling, punctuation, etc.
c) Format
Your academic research paper must have these sections: Abstract, Introduction, Related Work, Analysis and Conclusion. You must have to follow IEEE format strictly. The format is available in MS-WORD format (Click here to download). No academic research paper will be accepted without mentioned format.
d) References
You must have to study published research papers (minimum 10). The references of published research papers and books are allowed. Any unauthorized materials’ references will not be acceptable.

You can access Research Papers on your VULMS account using link [HEC Digital Library], Google Scholar and other online free research paper repositories.

Submission and Deadlines
Students are required to finalize and submit their academic research paper by February 12, 2016.

As the academic research paper carries 15% of the total course grade, therefore it must contain implementation results of the proposed research idea. Similarly, in case of a review paper the “Discussion” section must contain student’s comments/conclusions and future research agendaregarding the domain being reviewed.

Presentation
Students will be required to give presentation (through Skype/TeamViewer/Recorded-presentation etc.) of their academic research paper, well before final-term examinations. The detailed schedule for the presentations will be communicated with the students later. The presentation accounts for 5% marks of the total course grade.

Team
Students can do this assignment in groups but in that case their academic research paper must be of high quality justifying the efforts of all the members in the group.

Warning: Write in your own words, do not copy-paste. Plagiarism is not acceptable. In case plagiarism is found, you will be awarded zero marks. No excuse will be accepted in this regard. For further understanding about plagiarism, please follow the links:

Question 1 Marks 25
Consider a paging system with a page table stored in memory.
(a) Marks 5
If a memory reference takes 200 nanoseconds, how long does a paged reference take (reference is retrieved from page table in memory and then program data is retrieved from memory) Assume all pages are in memory?
(b) Marks 10
If we add a Translation Look-aside Buffer (TLB), and 75 percent of all page-table references are found in the TLB i.e. the TLB hit ratio is 75%, what is the effective memory reference time on average? (Assume that finding a page table entry in TLB takes 10 nanoseconds, if the entry is there.) Assume all pages are in memory.
© Marks 10
What is the effective memory reference time if the hit ratio for TLB is 70%, the hit ratio for memory is 20%, and 10% of the time we must go out to the disk to load the faulted page in memory, where context switching, disk transfer time takes 100 m seconds.
Question 2 Marks 10
Consider a file that is 1000 disk blocks in size. Assume that a disk block is to be appended to the end of the file, which shall cause the file size to grow to 1001 blocks. How many disks read and write operations are required to update the file and the file descriptor? Assume that the file is stored as a linked list with the pointer to the next file block stored at the end of each block. Also assume that both the file and the file descriptor are initially on disk and that file buffer cache is empty. How will your answer change if a multi-level index scheme is used instead of a linked file organization?
For this case assume that the file descriptor (i-node) can store 1000 disk block entries and each indirect block has 1024 entries ==> block 1001 is in the 1st level indirect block
Question 3
Read the attached paper titled “Time-Sharing Time Warp via Lightweight Operating System Support” and answer the following questions.
a) Marks 7
