MGT503 – Principles of Management

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Monday, January 16, 2012
Discussion Question:

Jack is a manager of an Australian multinational company – operating in Pakistan, too. He has been recently transferred to Pakistan as operations manager and has to fit in the Pakistani work culture.

According to Geert Hofstede, national cultures – of various countries – differ on the following dimensions: individualism vs. collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity vs. femininity.

The table below shows Jack’s cultural values (according to Hofstede’s findings) and the Pakistani employees’ motivational needs (according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs).

You are supposed to search Hofstede’s results on Australian and Pakistani cultures on internet and/or books. And based on this information, compare and analyze both columns given in the table. Then write the implications of cultural differences (one suggestion EACH, refer to instructions for word limit) for Jack that what he should do, and how, to motivate Pakistani employees – by matching both columns.

Highly masculine society(Australia) - Employees Motivation Needs (Pakistani)
Implication for Jack

Pakistan scores 50 on this dimension and is thus a masculine society. In masculine countries people “live in order to work”. Manager should be decisive and assertive, the emphasis is on equity, competition and performance and conflicts are resolved by fighting them out.

Highly individualistic (Australia) - Self-actualization need (Pakistani)

Implication for Jack

Pakistan is a collectivist society, so the score for individualism is low. Family plays an important role in Pakistani society. Pakistani people prefer to work around people they know well and those they trust

Unequal power distribution (Australia) - Self esteem (Pakistan)

Jack should Prevent unequal power distribution as it is harmful to self-esteem of a person.

Merit-based reward system (Australia) - Physiological needs (Pakistan)

Merit based reward system must be given preference as this system does not conflict with physiological needs
